Ziemia jest jedyną planetą w przestrzeni kosmicznej na której rozwinęło się życie. Cienka powłoka ziemi, wody i powietrza, nie grubsza niż 20 km - oto przestrzeń życiowa dla ogromnej ilości gatunków roślin i zwierząt - od najmniejszych bakterii do olbrzymich wielorybów i gigantycznych drzew. Powszechnie wiadomo, że pierwsze organizmy na naszej planecie liczącej cztery i pół miliarda lat, pojawiły się dwa - trzy miliardy lat temu. Były to bakterie i glony. Prymitywne formy roślin i zwierząt, które występowały 600 mln. lat temu, dziś są dla nas nieznane. Gatunki zwierząt i roślin rozprzestrzeniały się na lądzie i w wodzie w bardzo określony, nieprzypadkowy sposób. Dziś świat zwierzęcy jest bardzo bogaty i różnorodny, zamieszkują go liczne gatunki ssaków, gadów i płazów.
